3 Key Tips To Fill Your Graffiti

If you're trying to learn graffiti or take your skills to the next level, mastering your color fills is essential. A well-executed fill can make your graffiti pop, show off your letter structure, and give your piece real visual impact. In today’s guide, we're breaking down three powerful tips on how to do graffiti fillings the right way. Whether you're new to the game or a more experienced writer looking to level up, these tips will help you understand how to color graffiti using real design principles and color theory.

Tip #1: Start with Color Harmony

When you start coloring your graffiti, don’t just choose random colors. Think in terms of color harmony — combinations of colors that naturally work well together. This includes complementary colors, split complementary, analogous, triadic, and monochromatic schemes. Understanding these principles will help you create clean, visually pleasing graffiti that looks intentional. Using tools like Procreate’s color harmony tool or online color scheme generators can help, but you shouldn’t rely on them forever. The goal is to train your eye and develop your own style through color theory for graffiti.

Tip #2: Use Contrast to Make Your Piece Pop

Contrast is key to making your graffiti stand out. This could mean using light colors against dark colors, warm colors against cool, or saturated colors against muted ones. Without contrast, your graffiti will blend into the wall and/or itself and lose its impact. Look at professional pieces and notice how contrast is used between letters to make areas pop.

Tip #3: Choose a Key Color

A key color is the main character of your color scheme — the hue that everything else is built around. It can be the most saturated, the most visible, or the most repeated. Everything else in your graffiti piece should be there to support and enhance that key color. This gives your artwork focus and makes it easier for the viewer to understand and appreciate your color choices. Choosing a key color is one of the best ways to add professionalism and unity to your graffiti pieces.

Thats the short of it, pretty straight forward and simple. Over the next two weeks we’ll be teaching more about colors, with our final video being a dedicated tutorial about color thereory.
