How To Find Your Art Style & Evolve Your Style Too!

One of the most common goals for artists is to either find their art style, or to evolve it in some way. In this blog, I want to teach you exactly how to do that, and we’re going to keep it short and sweet. Part of the reason I want to give you the info with as little beating around the bush as possible is because of how many new artists tend to overthink this topic, so let’s begin.

How To Find Your Style

The harsh reality about being an amateur is that no beginner artist starts off with a style, we have to develop one, and the only way to do that is to learn the basics. What basics? Here’s a list!

Elements of Art

  • Line

  • Shape

  • Form

  • Value

  • Space

  • Color

  • Texture

These seven fundamentals make up the foundation of any and all things you might want to draw or paint. It is not physically possible to do visual art without using at least one, if not any combination of these seven fundamentals. Almost all of your skill, knowledge, and progress will depend on how much you study and how much you practice these seven topics, and yes, this includes the progression of style.

Art From Specific Fundamentals

Instead of starting this one with a list, we need to begin with an explanation. Art form specific fundamentals are a list of basics that govern and define a particular genre of art. Every art form has a fundamental set (art form specific fundamentals); otherwise, it wouldn’t be able to exist in the first place. Now this list will change based on the art form you choose to do, but let’s list off graffiti’s.

Technique

Techniques are simply how you go about doing your artform, and the tools you use and how you use them. Because this covers such a broad range of topics, techniques can be straightforward methods we’re all familiar with like blending, but how we blend could also be a technique. For example, are we using a dry brush or cross-hatching. If we’re using spray paint, how close or far is our can from the wall, and what cap are we using to blend? If we’re using oil paint, what brush are we using, how are we moving the brush, where are we holding the brush, and are we using any mediums? All of these would be secondary techniques to blending. Now, blending was just an example, but it shows how vast this topic can be.

How To Find Your Style

These are the “fundamentals”, be sure to study and practice these to get your style, keep in mind this is no easy task, and not a fast process. There are no shortcuts, there’s no way around it, learning the basics is the only way, and the fastest way to find your art style.

How To Evolve Your Style

These are the “fundamentals”, be sure to study and practice these to get your style, keep in mind this is no easy task and not a fast process. Once you’ve done that, evolving your style really boils down to studying and practicing these topics more; that’s it, it’s that simple. The hard part about learning art isn’t the information or finding some hidden knowledge that will unlock the fast track path for you. The hard part about learning art is having the discipline to practice the basics, even when you’re a professional or a master.
